  60. starting up a new list for any more subscribers.  This should have little
  61. to no affect on current subscribers... You will still get the e-mag each
  62. week, but the "to:" field may be a bit shorter.  Suffice it to say, we're
  63. thrilled to have so many subscribers! :)

  81. INTRODUCTION

  83. On the night of June 12, comic book history was made.  In the wake of
  84. Marvel Mart, retailers responded by their votes at the Diamond Gem Awards
  85. as D.C. came out the major winner of awards and the mantle of power shifted
  86. with No. 2 becoming No. 1 over Marvel.  Most importantly the keynote speech
  87. made by Mr. Frank Miller shook the walls of the convention center.  This
  88. man, sensitive to creators rights, eloquently spoke of many truths that had
  89. for too long been politely hushed.
  90.  
  91. I was fortunate enough to hold a press conference at the Omni Hotel (thank
  92. you Bonnie for the coffee) with the legend creators of Dark Horse Comics
  93. (thank you Lou Banks).  Luckily I had gotten to know Frank a few days
  94. before the interview, especially when we found out I had grown up with
  95. some of his relatives in my home town in Maryland.  With the ice broken,
  96. our interview turned into more of a conversation between one of the main
  97. creative forces in comics today and a comics retailer; two men with a
  98. common bond and a love of comics and the industry.  The notes for my
  99. interview were thrown to the wind and we centered the interview upon
  100. commenting about his beautiful and important speech, then eventually,
  101. his new projects.
  102.  
  103. The following interview is in two parts.  Part one is The Key Note Address
  104. and part two is New Projects.  This interview will be broadcast on the
  105. award winning cable television show Rapp'n Comics-Flights of Fantasy on
  106. B-TV Multivision Cable television in the near future.

  108. INTERVIEW:    PART ONE
  109.  
  110. JA: What's your reaction to the speech you made last night;  I mean how
  111.     did people react after you talked to them?
  112.  
  113. FM: Well, I'm the last person to ask really.  Nobody took a swing at me!
  114.  
  115. JA: Well of course...
  116.  
  117. FM: People seem to have very strong reactions one way or another.  If I'd
  118. been asked to appear and talk about the future of comics, and the only way
  119. I could address that was to talk about the past.  To tell the truth, I was
  120. sick of how polite everyone has been about crimes that have been committed
  121. in comics against the best talent.  Maybe the fact that we lost JACK KIRBY
  122. just a few months ago added that much more fire to what I had to say.  If
  123. we're going to have any dignity in the field, if we're going to amount to
  124. anything, then we have to recognize who gave us what we've got.  If we're
  125. going to move forward, we've got to realize where we've been.
  126.  
  127. JA:    I think too many times people forget so quickly.
  128.  
  129. FM:  They don't just forget, they just plain get it wrong.
  130.  
  131. JA:  Well, they get smoozed again; the Marvel Mart happened, then they
  132. (Marvel) says, Oh, we (Marvel) won't do that again.  You guys also got
  133. screwed or rather, our forefathers in the field got screwed.     
  134.  
  135. FM:  Actually, I never got screwed.  I want to be very clear about that.
  136. I hope I didn't come across like I was belly-aching up there.
  137.  
  138. JA:  You didn't.
  139.  
  140. FM:  I've gotten the very best of the system every step of the way.  For
  141. all that I rally about work for hire, I got the best end of it because I
  142. wasn't STEVE DITKO or JACK KIRBY.
  143.  
  144. JA:  You've learned from what happened to them.
  145.  
  146. FM:  Well, also, I wasn't making up the basic substance of it all, and
  147. that's the hardest thing to do.  I since learned how hard it is because
  148. I'm doing it now. But... I've had their whole work that filled my childhood
  149. with joy and it gave me things to work on.  I'm one of the lucky generation.
  150. So, I'm not complaining on my behalf that way.  I've got an income that
  151. far surpasses people who were unbelievable contributors to the comics
  152. industry.  A lot of them died in poverty.  So I guess I'm not complaining
  153. about my own situation; there's nothing to complain about.
  154.  
  155. JA:  Well you do stand up for other people's right and that seems to be an
  156. important part of LEGEND also.  It's a pleasure to see it, because somebody
  157. needs to.  Who are they going to potshot at but the man who talks... that's
  158. you Frank!
  159.  
  160. FM:    Me and my big mouth!
  161.  
  162. JA:    I did get to talk to different people after the speech in the industry.
  163. I talked to JIM SHOOTER, I talked to Marvel representatives, I talked to
  164. D.C.  Any time you make a stand on anything and you're a person whose voice
  165. people listen to, naturally there's going to be a reaction.  I suggested
  166. that possibly power structures have been altered, not just because of your
  167. speech, but you woke everybody up.  We're at the awards dinner;  It's a
  168. Party, It's a Party. Hey, thanks for the steak.  Nobody really thanked Mr.
  169. Geppi for the steak though.  Then, all of a sudden there's Mr. Miller up
  170. there, and he had something to say.  I was crying, it was a beautiful speech.
  171.  
  172. FM:    I was asked by Diamond Distribution to appear and talk about the future
  173. of comics.  I took that very seriously to the extent that I had the time.
  174. I worked on something that would address what the future of comics would be
  175. in my mind; what I wanted it to be, and why.  When I wrote it, I realized
  176. that comics have got such a strange sense of history that had to be
  177. addressed before anything could move forward.  Our own relationship with
  178. the censors over the years has been certainly confusing.   
  179.  
  180. JA:  It was incredible what you pointed out about the code; what really
  181. happened, that we really won.  Nobody acts like that.  It was all marketing.
  182. Like Rock N'Roll in the fifties.  1957 was an important year.  BUDDY HOLLY
  183. and all those people went down.  CHUCK BERRY got busted.  JERRY LEE LEWIS.
  184. This was to me like the conspiracy theory.  It changed to the white guys
  185. singing the black tunes, like Let's clean up this black music.
  186.  
  187. FM:    It was the worst possible time in terms of censorship!  In how people
  188. were ready for it.  People were willing to revoke the first amendment.
  189.  
  190. JA:    And direct it at Gaines (EC Comics).
  191.  
  192. FM:    EC Comics was shut down by his competition, not by the public at large.
  193. Not by the U.S. Senate.  That never happened.  This pack of lies has just
  194. been accepted for years and years, so when I was talking last night, I had
  195. to bring that up.  The best publisher that comics has ever had was shut down
  196. by his competition.  They used the fear of the time and they came up with a
  197. comics code which was nothing but an attempt to shut them down.
  198.  
  199. JA:  Well, they finished the Red Scare, they had to go on to comics, right?
  200.  
  201. FM:  It's very important to get the facts straight when you're talking about
  202. yesterday.  Comics are amazing for how much misconceptions and lies there
  203. are about them.
  204.  
  205. JA:    Today, with people talking about standardizing the code, as a retailer
  206. I have no problem with knowing what to sell to who.
  207.  
  208. FM:    Right!
  209.  
  210. JA:    So I can place it in the right place in my store.  Restricted by a
  211. strict code or whatever, we are forgetting the knowledge, not just the
  212. enjoyment factor.  The beautiful writing, the beautiful artwork, as in Jim
  213. Silkes' new book RASCALS IN PARADISE.  This is fantastic stuff.  They're
  214. attacking video and etc., and saying Let's go to comics.
  215.  
  216. FM:  That's really critical.  For one thing, they're not saying Let's go
  217. to comics, comics people are once again saying...
  218.  
  219. JA:  Oh, it's like They're out there.  Right?
  220.  
  221. FM:  That's the whole reason I brought it up!  They're saying, They're
  222. picking on someone else, lets surrender!.
  223.  
  224. JA:    Gotcha.
  225.  
  226. FM:  It's so important, the whole thing about cover advisories, they're so
  227. sneaky, cover advisories.  They're kind of easy on the faces, they go, Well
  228. it just says it's not for kids, never mind the fact it taking away the
  229. retailers rights to decide who it is for.  It's taking away publishers
  230. rights.  It still seems like it's relatively harmless, unless you consider
  231. it never existed in books and that Hollywood's a pack of cowards that
  232. surrendered to that years ago.  The t.v. people, even the cable people
  233. surrendered to that point books never have.
  234.  
  235. JA:  It's like the last frontier.
  236.  
  237. FM:    The publishing industry is where comics belong, comics are not a part
  238. of the electronic media.  I'd rather be in the publishing industry.  O.K.,
  239. it's smaller... you don't get the billion dollar sales; comics will never
  240. get that anyway.  What you do get is to be part of an industry that's
  241. utterly committed to the first amendment.  When you put these little things
  242. in the corner of covers, we're selling the next generation of artist out.

  263. Cosmic Comics, Roger Corman's recent venture into the field, has put
  264. its books on hiatus; a Cosmic Comics spokesperson said that the
  265. company will look at reentering the field further down the line...
  266.  
  267. Fans who enjoy the DC Vs. Marvel crossover series don't ever have to
  268. let it end, thanks to Fleer and SkyBox: the upcoming DC collectible
  269. card game from SkyBox will be called DC OverPower, and will be
  270. (have you already guessed?) fully compatible with the Marvel OverPower
  271. card system from Fleer.  Fans who want to get in on the crossover action
  272. early will have an opportunity in February; SkyBox's release of the
  273. embossed DC FirePower! trading card series will include the first
  274. six DC superhero OverPower cards, which can be utilized in your Marvel
  275. OverPower system immediately...
  276.  
  277. Twist & Shout Comics has announced that they have reached an agreement
  278. to publish the script for Alan Moore's Twilight, the series that
  279. eventually gave birth to The Watchmen...
  280.  
  281. And speaking of DC Vs. Marvel, both companies have a mysterious event
  282. planned for late February, just prior to the debut of Marvel Vs. DC #4;
  283. no one's spilling the beans on the whole thing quite yet, but rest assured
  284. that we'll all find out in the next few weeks...
  285.  
  286. Randy Reynaldo, writer/artist of Adventure Strip Digest Starring Rob Hanes,
  287. has announced plans to collect his early work on the series in a trade
  288. paperback entitled Rob Hanes Archives; look for it in March...
  289.  
  290. Toy collector alert: DC, Diamond, and Kenner are offering a special
  291. Superman/Batman action figure two-pack in February; this two-pack will
  292. feature a platinum edition comic, while the toy-market two-pack will
  293. feature a standard comic book...
  294.  
  295. David Lapham, writer/artist of Stray Bullets, has signed a deal to write
  296. and direct his first feature film for Miramax Films and their Dimension
  297. Pictures division....
  298.  
  299. In light of the success of the Batman films from Warner, there's talk of
  300. new Wonder Woman and Superman films, although nothing definite has been
  301. announced yet; Jon Peters name is being associated with the projects,
  302. though, according to CNN...
  303.  
  304. Word has it that Marvel is very close to signing a deal to bring back
  305. some major talent to take over several Fantastic Four and Avengers family
  306. titles; no deal has been signed yet, but as soon as it's official, CSN
  307. will let you know...

  309. Erik Larsen is the latest Image honcho to venture into $.99 comic territory:
  310. The Dragon presents the original Savage Dragon miniseries and the story
  311. from Image #0 in a five-issue $.99 comic format...
  312.

  363. 12/7/95 - Marlowe & Company, publishers of the recently issued Sam & Max
  364. trade paperback, has reached a formal agreement with Neil Gaiman and Mark
  365. Buckingham regarding the publishing rights to "Miracleman", formerly
  366. published by Eclipse Comics. Marlowe is working with Buckingham and a
  367. representative for Gaiman to become Miracleman's new publisher.
  368.  
  369. A nearly completed Miracleman #25 has been in limbo since Eclipse Comics'
  370. implosion and following shut-down. Eclipse Comics' final bankruptcy hearing
  371. is soon to be set.

  376. 12/6/95 - Comics creator John Byrne (Next Men, Wonder Woman) will begin
  377. writing and penciling DC Comics' New Gods title, beginning with issue #12.

  393.    Who knows what prenatal nostaligia lurks in the hearts of men?
  394.    SUSPENDED ANIMATION knows.
  395.    Prenatal nostalgia is the sentimental longing for things that
  396. existed before you were born.
  397.    For readers slapping foreheads and muttering 'duh', I don't
  398. understand either. But I love old radio shows, movie serials, comic
  399. strips, toys, advertising and pulp magazines popular before the '50s.
  400.    I love DOC SAVAGE and THE SHADOW, and read their new comic book with
  401. great prenatal nostalgia. And put it down with great unfulfilled
  402. prenatal nostalgia.
  403.    It wasn't the comic; it was me.
  404.    The writing is clean, full of action and the touchmarks of both
  405. characters. Doc's copper skullcap, Empire State building headquarters,
  406. and sidekicks Ham and Monk are here. Lamont's penetrating eyes, network
  407. of agents, barking guns and huge black cape and slouch hat are every-
  408. where. I hear his haunting, eerie laugh established by the radio show.
  409.    In this two issue mini-series, "The Case of the Shrieking Skeletons",
  410. skeletal horrors invade New York City and the heroic figures of Doc and
  411. The Shadow butt heads as the mystery unravels.
  412.    The plot is perfect for both heroes. Weird monsters, Nazis, secret
  413. serums, beautiful women, zeppelins and autogyros add to the '30s period
  414. flavor.
  415.    The art is crisp, exciting and perfectly suited to it's subject. Icons
  416. of the '30s add spice to almost every page, and violence is threatening
  417. without being excessively bloody.
  418.    But that same warm familiarity underlying nostalgia that also demands
  419. new material hold true to old standards can also produce big yawns if
  420. _nothing_ new is added.
  421.    Nothing new is added.
  422.    Recommended for those with an unjaded eye.

  1239. $100,000 in fines for the possession of "obscene" material, Douglas
  1240. R. Pratt, proprietor of the Comics/Animation Forum on the CompuServe
  1241. Information Service has offered a unique challenge to concerned fans.
  1242. "I've sent a personal check to Comic Book Legal Defense Fund," said
  1243. Pratt, "I want to encourage each of you to do so, as well. And I'll
  1244. give you something in exchange. Before you send your check to CBLDF,
  1245. make a photocopy of it, write your User ID number on it and send the
  1246. copy to me. If your donation was at least ten bucks, I'll give you a
  1247. week of free access to Comics/Animation, Comics Publishers, and
  1248. Funnies Forums."

  1286. Hibbs, "Depending on the extent of a participant's use, he could be
  1287. giving the equivalent of $100 or more in services. I'm absolutely

  1289. users see the professional and friendly place Doug provides, they'll

  1317. You too can enjoy the intelligent conversations and informative threads
  1318. that occupy the conferences of the Comic Book Net every day! However,
  1319. many people who read this e-mag aren't familiar with the Local BBS
  1320. echo-mail system....
  1321.  
  1322. Bulletin Board Systems are scattered everywhere across the USofA, and
  1323. many of them are free!  Chances are, if you have a modem you have
  1324. the accompanying communications software.  Using the Terminal Emulation
  1325. software that came with your modem, you can dial up one of the many
  1326. systems linked into CBN (see the listings down a few paragraphs). Most
  1327. of the boards offer all the message echoes in the Comic Book Network...
  1328. there are message bases devoted to all the bigger comics publishers, as
  1329. well as big Small Press and Independent message bases, not to mention
  1330. sections for general (doesn't even have to be about comics!)
  1331. conversation. 
  1332.  
  1333. If you are worried about long distance charges, worry no longer! Most
  1334. if not all the BBS's offer a mail service from which you can download
  1335. a .QWK packet of recent e-mail to read offline with a program called
  1336. an offline mail reader.  You can read & write messages at your leisure,
  1337. and then upload your own messages & replies the next time you call your
  1338. local BBS.  There are many .QWK packet readers out there, for every
  1339. type of computer system.  They all give you a better explaination in
  1340. their documentation than I can.   These programs are available all over
  1341. the Internet and are downloadable from most BBS's.
  1342.  
  1343. These "mail runs" (dialing up, downloading the mail packet and uploading
  1344. replies) generally take less than 5 minutes to accomplish, and at the
  1345. average after-5pm/weekends/holidays long distance phone rates, that is
  1346. LESS THAN 75¢!  See? Even less expensive than many of the commercial
  1347. information services available! :)
  1348.  
  1349. So what else can you find on free BBS systems?  Theres plenty of files
  1350. for specific types of computers.  Some systems also offer other types
  1351. of message networks ranging from general topics to specific themes
  1352. like sci-fi, role playing, games, music, etc.  And, let's not forget
  1353. online games.  Join into the many different multiplayer games, each
  1354. system sports different challenges.  There's nothing like becoming
  1355. the most powerful being in a online adventure!
  1356.  
  1357. And when you _do_ log on, leave a message in The Bullpen conference to
  1358. ALL, and introduce yourself to us!  You're guaranteed to get plenty of
  1359. replies and all the help you need to join in the fun!
